Tunnel Vision – a modern hermitage

Collaboration with artist Marianne Lammersen

In contemporary times we no longer have the luxury to interpret a hermitage as a romantic outpost borrowing views of the wild.   Simply because the existence of the wild is already debatable in The Netherlands. Instead we embrace our undeniable urban conditions as ground zero and attempt to find escapes within.  ‘Tunnel Vision’ shows the idea that within the urban landscape and its inherent visual language we can still find inspirations and clues to trigger our day dreaming and escapes.   We can simply re-interpret   the urban landscapes around us to reach our inner self instead of running away from it.

A city skyline, with it’s form and volumes relating to the horizon is flipped -  literally – on its side.   The skyline existing of scale models, abstracted from iconic buildings, are executed in glass.  The result of these glass objects on the surface seem to resemble a hybrid of something man made and something that grows organic. But what is revealed to the public is not only the outside form, the true ‘escape’ will be experienced when entering the space, swirling into a light soft, organic space, where the your body is forced to touch the textile walls, to feel present. Arrived in the chapel-like space, your mind can escape again, looking through the ‘tunnels’ of glass, that reveal new insights and views.

From the outside a rational monolithic block and understandable skyline is presented. The same shapes give us - experienced from the inside - a tactile and visual sanctuary to dream away.

We hope to offers the visitor a different perspective from its conventional appreciation or disdain of a city-scape.
